A psychometric test is a type of assessment that evaluates an individual’s cognitive ability, personality and interests. More often than not, it is used during the hiring process to help employers decide if a candidate is a good fit for a position or not.

According to Section 8 of the Employment Equity Act of 1998, “psychometric testing and other similar assessments of an employee are prohibited unless the test or assessment being used has been scientifically shown to be valid and reliable, can be applied fairly to all employees, is not biased against any employee; and has been certified by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) established under the Health Professions Act, 56 of 1974 or any other body which may be authorised by law to certify such tests or assessments.”

When conducting psychometric tests, the following must be considered:

  • Validity and reliability: Tests must accurately evaluate what they claim to measure and generate reliable and consistent results.
  • Job relevance: All tests must be affiliated to the job or role for which they are being utilised.
  • Confidentiality: At all times, the results or outcomes of psychometric tests must be handled discreetly and with respect for the individual’s privacy.
  • Informed consent: It is imperative to inform individuals who are being tested about the purpose of the test and how the results will be utilised.

To ensure a psychometric test is fair and relevant, it is important to distinguish between the following factors:

  • The purpose of the psychometric test: What is being evaluated?
  • The content and difficulty of the test: What distinct skills, knowledge and level of difficulty do you want to evaluate?
  • The format of the test: What sort of questions will be the most effective in evaluating the skills or knowledge which you want to analyse?
  • The length of the test: What is the time limit for the individual to complete the test?
  • The scoring of the test: What is the pass or fail indicator?

Psychometric tests have numerous of benefits. Firstly, they are a reliable and universal way to evaluate an individual’s abilities, skills and personality. Secondly, they assist in identifying an individual’s strengths and weaknesses, which can point them to the right job. Thirdly, they identify an individual’s potential for development and highlight any areas of concern. Lastly, they are a great tool for evaluating an individual’s compatibility for a specific role or organisation.
